What is anger?

Anger is an emotion we have all felt. It’s usually characterized as a negative emotion like fear, disgust, shame, irritability, outrage, and hostility which could lead to violence. Depending on your temperament, you may describe it as rage, aggression, violence, annoyance, displeasure, irritation, provoked, or hostility. It can vary in severity from small annoyances to rage.

The body also shows reactions when we feel angry. For example, when you are stuck in traffic, you may start to feel your heart rate go up. This could raise your blood pressure which could result in a jolt of adrenaline.

Why do we get angry?

There are many different reasons why you get angry. One source comes from external events. You might become irritated by a person or a situation. It could be what a person has said or done to you. It could be a scenario where things aren’t working out the way you planned.

Another source of anger can be internal. When we are brewing over thoughts of problems or injustice. When we get worried about things, we can eventually fall into a fit of rage that makes it hard to move forward.

Lastly, there are occasions when people have past trauma that is triggered. These triggers may touch on or remind the person of the traumatic event and, many times, instantly, the person is enraged. It is this category that could take time to recover from and most cases deserve counseling to find godly and healthy solutions.

What does the Bible say about anger?

The Bible makes clear that anger is a normal emotion that everyone experiences it. It is not sinful to be angry. Paul tells the Ephesians,

“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold” (Ephesians 4:26-27, NIV)

There are also Bible verses that talk about the issue of uncontrolled anger. Proverbs describe two different people when it comes to anger.

“Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end” (Proverbs 29:11, NIV)

Anger is a valid emotion to have and necessary to survive in life. Without it, you aren’t a complete person. The Bible doesn’t condemn our anger, but it does tell us to practice self-control which is a fruit of the Spirit. (Gal. 5:22-23)
